Sacrificial Love

Lift Up …

Lord, thank You for the supreme sacrifice of Your life that separated us from the power of sin and death. Praise You, Lord, for Your example of love, by which I can gauge my motives and actions in this life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Look At …

Last time, we looked in the mirror of God’s Word and learned to differentiate between genuine and artificial believers. John helped us discern the validity of a person’s claim of belonging to the family of God. We concluded that we must be wise and observant in this world. Those who don’t love and worship the Lord will hate those who do. Yet even being hated for our love of Christ is an honor because the world hated Him before it hated us (see John 15:18).

This week John will introduce to us another test of salvation: the outward working of love that reflects the presence of God in a believer’s heart. Our actions speak louder than our words. We can’t be in pursuit of the treasures of the world without losing our focus and our witness to others.

Read 1 John 3:16–17.

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 1 John 3:16–17
